General Medicine Master CME: Malaria II : Clinical Features & Early Diagnosis of Malaria

Introduction

Clinicians need to be aware of the symptoms and treatment options in order to properly diagnose and treat this potentially fatal disease. Malaria can be suspected based on the patient’s symptoms and the physical findings at examination. If a timely diagnosis and treatment is not undertaken, then the patient is likely to develop serious complications. However, for a definitive diagnosis to be made, laboratory tests must demonstrate the malaria parasites or their components. This module gives a brief overview about the different modalities available for the early clinical diagnosis of malaria and its complications in an outpatient setup.
