COURSE OVERVIEW
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is highly prevalent and is the major cause of morbidity and mortality patients with diabetes. The prevalence of CHD in diabetes patients can be as high as 55% as against 2-4% in the general population. Diabetes mellitus is an independent risk factor for CVD in both men and women. The National Cholesterol Education Program guidelines, consider diabetes mellitus as a “CHD risk equivalent,” indicating that a diagnosis of diabetes places a patient at similar risk of a future episode of CHD as a prior CHD episode. Therefore tight glycemic control is effective in reducing this huge risk of CHD in diabetes patients. Through the present module the relationship between diabetes and CHD with pathogenesis occurring due to one disease over another and managing these cases has been explained.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this activity participant will understand:
• The association between CHD and diabetes
• The various pathological process involved in the two co-morbid states
• Management of the disease states
