COURSE OVERVIEW
Hypertension has a worldwide high incidence in the general population and undoubtedly is the most Important risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Long-term antihypertensive efficacy requires treatment that combines reliable 24-hour reduction of blood pressure with good tolerability to facilitate patient compliance and prevent end-organ damage. Currently, a plethora of antihypertensive medications exist. However. adverse effects of long-term use of many of these agents may onset their benefits. Likewise. the majority of negative cardiovascular effects of angiotensin II are mediated through the angiotensin II type 1 (AT,) receptor. hence specific blockade of this receptor is a rational approach for achieving these ideals. Losartan, the first introduced ARB, has demonstrated excellent efficacy in comparison with other antihypertensives and, has other, non-hemodynamic benefits. Including a uricocsuric effect and the ability to promote cardiac remodeling. This module will review the management strategies for achieving optimal blood pressure with a locus on the potential benefits of losartan in the management of hypertension.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end this activity, the participant will be able to:
• Discuss the various pharmacological options available for hypertensive patients.
• Institute guideline-based therapy in hypertensIve patients.
• Explain the place of angiotensin receptor blockers in the therapeutic area of hypertension.
• List the efficacy, tolerability and additional beneficial effects of losartan therapy.
