COURSE OVERVIEW
Fungal skin infections (mycoses) have become increasingly important in last few decades. Nearly 90% of fungal skin infections are caused by ‘dermatophytes’, which are parasitic fungi affecting the skin, hair and nails. Athlete’s foot, jock itch, ringworm, nail fungus and
scalp fungus are all common types of fungal infections affecting the skin. In primary care settings, advanced practice clinicians frequently encounter skin lesions that are not readily identifiable, making treatment decisions tricky. Through this module the clinician will be able to distinguish different types of fungal infections, differences and similarities between fungal infections and allergic eruptions and various topical treatment options available to treat these infections.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this activity, the participant will be able to:
• Identify and differentiate various fungal skin infections commonly observed in clinical practice
• Diagnose various fungal skin infections
• Understand the role of diverse topical medications available for treating fungal skin infections
